The Window Across
Amelia had been telling me all about the window across the street from our apartment for a while now. The first time she mentioned it was a couple of weeks ago. It was late at night, and I was in bed waiting for her when she came out of the bathroom in one of her most sexy lingeries. As she slowly walked towards me, she stopped suddenly and said she had spotted a couple living in an apartment right across from ours. I must admit that at the time I had no interest in the story whatsoever, and my face managed to reveal all of my lack of interest; it wasn`t enough to stop her from further explaining, though.
"What about the couple, Lia? What`s so interesting about them?"
"The girl was alone yesterday, when I first spotted them." She said.
"I bet she`s not alone anymore. I bet they`re having fun. Let`s take a look."
"How do you even know they`re a couple?"
"I bet she`s not alone anymore. I bet they`re having fun. Let`s take a look."
"How do you even know they`re a couple?"
"Intuition. You wanna make a bet?" We were the kind of couple that loved the occasionally unusual game, so I thought to myself, why the hell not? I asked her what kind of bet we were talking about, and the way she put it, it was a risky one. "I`ll take a look at their window with my binoculars, and whatever it is that they`re doing, we`ll do the same."
"Again, you don`t know they`re a couple. What if she`s just a lonely girl? What if there`s no one with her? Then what?"
"Again, you don`t know they`re a couple. What if she`s just a lonely girl? What if there`s no one with her? Then what?"
"Then you win, and you get to decide what happens next."
Needless to say, I told her to go ahead and take a peep. She told me she was right, and she was no lonely girl after all. There was a guy there, and they were fooling around. After some moments of detailed narrative, Amelia said the girl was stripping; that`s when she dropped the binoculars and started doing the same. I didn`t mind at all.
The reason why I remembered this episode was because the last time Amelia and I spoke, we had a serious argument, and I haven`t seen her since. She`s left town for a while, and I can only speculate on whether we`ll still be together when she returns or not. After we had yelled and cursed at one another, she sat by the window in all of her beautiful melancholy. She took one last look through her binoculars at the window across, and before she left, she said I could have been right all along.
At night, as I was alone in the apartment, I realized Amelia had left her binoculars on the floor by the window, and for the first time I was curious to take a look at the couple she had been speaking about for the past weeks. I got up, held the field glasses within my hands, and took a look at the window right across from ours, and on its reflection, I could see that the girl wasn`t there, but instead, only the guy was around, with binoculars at hand, taking a peep at my window.
