Riding Pink Rainbows
"You're saying you saw Dr. Jonas outside riding a pink rainbow?" The assistant physician asked the patient, as he calmly sat on one of the chairs by the table at the recreation room, and read through an old book.
"That's exactly what I said. Weren't you listening?"
"You know what, Fernando? I don't think I've ever seen a pink rainbow before. Let alone a person riding one.
"Well," Fernando said as he put a book down and looked sideways at the assistant physician. "You haven't been looking, have you? It's not because it's pink that it doesn't exist! Haven't you ever had a dream in which you messed up all the colors?! You see, Dr. Jonas and I, we've been close friends since before you even got here. She always talked to me about how she'd ride a rainbow one day, even it weren't possible. Even if it meant she could only do it in her dreams. It was a childhood fantasy of hers, to live in her dreams. You wouldn't understand." The man then placed a hand under his chin and allowed all of his melancholy in. His eyes filled up with tears, and he held his jaw a bit angrily.
"What's wrong, Fernando? You suddenly seem upset... Was it something I said?"
"Not at all... It's just that I'll miss her. Dr. Jonas was one of the few people around here who actually believed me. She listened. She cared. Everyone's gonna miss her."
"Fernando, Dr. Jonas will be here shortly. She's just a little late. Don't worry about it, okay? She'll be here shortly, you'll see."
The assistant physician took some notes about the patient's condition that morning. He then got up and made his way to the attendance clerk, where a fellow colleague waved at him urgently.
"What's up?" The young physician said.
"Dude, you have to sign up for the day. I just got a call from management; Dr. Jonas won't show up at all. She had a heart attack." The clerk said with the most tense gaze he could possibly come up with.
" Oh, my God! Is she alright?!"
"Nah, dude. She died in her sleep."
